An on-the-court life orientation class
After years of robust planning, PEP, the largest single-brand retailer in South Africa, launched PEP mini netball festivals in April 2023 in partnership with South African Schools Netball (SASN). This initiative, aimed at reaching young girls aged 7 to 10, was designed to create a nurturing and supportive environment that fosters play, learning, and social interaction – key aspects of any childhood. The initiative, which has been committed for a further two years, encourages growth and promotes long-term sustainability within local community upliftment. This sustainability focus includes youth development, with the intent to continue to invest in this area as long as the need and positive impact remain.
The tapestry of PEP mini netball
This initiative ties back to the brand’s founding principles of accessibility, inclusivity and making a positive difference in the communities they serve. With the guidance and expertise of SASN, an opportunity was identified to elevate the experience of school netball at a grassroot level by introducing young girls to the sport of netball while building their self-esteem and confidence. The PEP mini netball festivals are more than simply a sports event; they provide a unique platform where foundational netball skills and vital life skills are effortlessly intertwined, providing young girls with the opportunity to aim high and build their confidence to succeed both on and off the court.
These festivals mark the start of what promises to be a life-changing experience for the young girls participating. The skills and values imparted to them during these festivals are not just confined to the netball court; they are life skills and tools that they carry with them as they navigate the complexities of life, emerging as true champions in every sense.
Empowering communities from within
PEP, recognising that sustainability spills into nurturing and empowering communities, sowed seeds of self-esteem, confidence, and leadership through the mini netball festivals, growing the love for the sport and fostering an empowered, confident future generation.
Impact beyond the game
Launched in local communities in the Western Cape, the Free State and Gauteng in 2023 with plans to extend into North West, the Northern Cape and Limpopo in 2024, these festivals intertwine fun and education while crafted by the knowledgeable and experienced hands at SASN. PEP, committed to bolstering community spirit and enhancing accessibility, has crafted safe and nurturing environments where the young can boldly explore their potential and aim high.

The young girls participating in the PEP mini netball festivals embody this philosophy. Their growth contributes to weaving sustainable livelihoods and crafting futures filled with opportunities. Each participant gains from the experience and plays a pivotal role in shaping a more positive and opportunity-rich environment for themselves and their communities.
