5 000 tonnes reused

Published: FY2021

The group does not produce much waste as most of our products are either pre-packed by suppliers (mostly furniture and appliances) or arrive at our DCs in cartons (clothing, footwear, homeware and FMCG products).

When products are unpacked and picked for store orders, we need additional cartons to pack products according to orders and store locations.

To save on packaging costs, PEP buys preused FMCG cartons. Packaging that could potentially end in landfill is being reused by PEP, and then recycled by the stores once orders have been received.

Stores are responsible for recycling and will either tap into shopping centre/landlord recycling efforts or make the cartons available to informal recyclers who collect paper for their own income generation purposes.

PEP’s Johannesburg DC receives 40 000 pre-used cartons every week. These cartons are flat-packed and stacked until it is used for product picking and packing.
