Electricity
With an extensive store footprint, Pepkor is heavily reliant on municipal power supply and, in most instances, on the property owners for the supply of electricity because of leases.
Without power in our stores, the businesses cannot trade and could impact our ability to serve customers. Across the group, consistent power supply and the cost of utilities are growing challenges. Electricity is the biggest contributor to the group’s direct emissions and has a significant financial impact in terms of costs.
While we do not always have direct influence over how and where we source electricity and respect our tenant/landlord relationships, we proactively make changes where we can. Some stores have access to solar power through the shopping centres where they are located, while many of the operating businesses have implemented initiatives to reduce the usage and cost of electricity, and access sources of green energy through own investment.
